Forgotten Ground Regained

Historical Texts

There are scores of poems in alliterative verse written in Old and Middle English, Old Norse and Icelandic, and other ancient Germanic languages (plus other languages, like Finnish). Historically, most of these poems were only accessible to specialists, but most of them have now been published online, and there are often online translations of them too. This makes it much easier to study medieval alliterative poems, no matter who you are or where you live.
The links on this age give you a fast way to access poems in Old English, Middle English, and in other languages. For convenience I have included pages specifically for Beowulf and the works of the Pearl Poet, author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
You might also check out the Medieval Poetry Project and TEAMS Middle English sites directly.
