William Morris
William Morris (1834-1896) was a British author, poet, social activist, and founder of the "Arts and Crafts" movement that sought to revive traditional craftsmanship in reaction to the trend towards industrialization. He was also one of the founders of the fantasy genre. His highly alliterative metrical poem "In Prison" (1858) is an early imitation of Norse Poetry. The Mayor's speech in his poem Love Is Enough (1872) is literally the first recognized attempt to produce original modern English alliterative verse, and was noted as such in the second edition of Coventry Patmore's Essay on Metrical Law (1885).
