K.M. Butler is an author of historical fiction set mostly in Dark Ages Europe. While writing his debut novel, The Raven and the Dove, Butler researched the alliterative and carefully metered poetic style of Norse skalds. The novel includes a selection of in-universe skaldic poems commemorating the achievements of various characters, which plays a pivotal role in critical plot twists. He has a M.A. in literature from Carnegie Mellon University, where he studied Chaucer in Middle English and the Greek poets.
His alliterative poetry include “When the hard-souled one …”, “Borvi the Brazen ..”, and “All-Father Speaks”, which appear in The Raven and the Dove: A Novel of Viking Normandy. His other novels include The Thief and the Nightingale: A novel of medieval Spain, House Aretoli: A novel of medieval Venice, and The Welsh Dragon: A novel of Henry Tudor.
