Forgotten Ground Regained
Had It Not Been the Lord (Psalm 124)
Poem revised from The Song of Joseph and Selected Poems. Psalm 124:8 is the Antiphon in the Introit for New Year’s Eve. #keepallhope
Had it not been the Lord, the living God,who was on our side to save us—sing, O Israel—had it not been the Lord, the living God,who took our side when foes attacked us,they would have gulped us down in devastating wrath. Then the surging waters would have overwhelmed us,the swift torrents would have swamped our soul;then the swollen waters would have swamped our soul.
Blest be the Lord, who has let us liveuntorn by our foes’ terrible teeth.Like a bird we have flown from the fowler’s snare;the snare is broken and our soul is freed. The Lord who saves us, the living God,the maker of the earth is our mighty help.
