John Houghton is an emeritus chaplain and instructor at The Hill School, Pottsdam, Pennsylvania, where he taught ethics and philosophical theology. A graduate of the Medieval Institute of the University of Notre Dame, he is the author of a fantasy novel, Rough Magicke, and a collections of poems, Falconry and Other Poems. A Tolkien fan since the 1970s, he has made major contributions to Tolkien studies, inclulding publications in Beyond Bree, Mythlore, Mythprint, Tolkien the Medievalist, Tolkien Studies, and the J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia
His alliterative verse includes a poem set in Tolkien's Middle Earth, The Lay of Baldor: A Play for Voices, published in The Year's Work in Medieval Studies, 30, 2015.
