Forgotten Ground Regained
Edwin Morgan
Edwin Morgan (1920-2010) was a noted Scottish poet and translator. He was the first poet laureate of Glasgow and the first "makar" or Scottish national poet. He produced influential translations of various Old English poems, most notably Beowulf, "The Ruin", and "The Wanderer".
His poem in nonalliterating half-lines, Spacepoem 3: Off Course appears in Dennis Wise's critical anthology of modern alliterative verse. It was originally published in Frontier Going: An Anthology of Space Poetry.
He wrote two purely alliterative poems (both available in his Collected Poems):
- A Song of the Petrel (a translation of a Gorky poem from the Russian) was published in his first collection, A Vision of Cathkin Braes (Glasgow: MacLellan, 1952).
- "Jocasta" appears in his poem sequence "An Alphabet of Goddesses" (first published in his Selected Poems, 1985).
