Forgotten Ground Regained
The Breath of His Lips (Isaiah 11:1-5)
Isaiah 11:1-5 is read on the 1st Sunday after Christmas and the Visitation, July 2.
A Rod shall emerge from the root of Jesse;a Branch from his stump shall bud and blossom;new fruit shall flourish from his fertile stock. The Lord’s Spirit shall ever inspire Himwith wise understanding and counsel and strengthand moral knowledge and most of allthe fear of the Lord—His first delight.
What His eyes see, what His ears hearshall not determine His truth and justice. But when the poor are oppressed by prideful men,He shall justly rule between right and wrong. His equity shall decide for the earth’s meek ones. The rod of His mouth shall smite the ruthless;the breath of His lips shall blot out the wicked.Righteousness and faithfulness shall wrap His waist, girding Him for great and godly deeds.
