Our Love is a Carnival Ride

Lindy Newns
New Series, Issue 10, Spring, 2026
in the reek of candy floss the stink of fatin a jolting lurching truckoh yes I say I lovethis fairground ridewith its sudden stops and startsthe jerksI love to fear the bugaboothe weirdI love to laugh as I scream and spinbut cannot winhere it comes again the clatter of chainsthe hanging man the skeletal handthe scraps of rag blown in my faceby hidden fansanother crack and down the trackwe go againI don’t know where I amWait! I say let’s find a spacesomewhere beyond this haunted house, away from barkers’ yellsfrom bumper cars and Tilt a Whirl, butwires crackle and spark the music startsand there you are with your staring eyesyour pointed teeth
