Forgotten Ground Regained

Kenning the Cobble

Matthew Dickerson
1. Accidental Archway Deborah called it · a magic door —this white pine felled · by some fierce windacross the trail · after roots and trunkhad drawn to itself · the earth’s disease:a leaning arch · leading awayfrom vegetable garden · I vainly managetoward the wild · wooded messinesswhere we cling to no · conceit of control.
2. Vernal VisionsBloodroot, spring beauty, Dutchman’s britches, last autumn’s leaves, and trout lily, festoon the forest · floor of springtimegracing the ground · we tread together.Coda pees and sniffs · piles of fresh pelletsdropped indiscreetly · by passing deerwho nibble buds · off berry bushes. Here, too, hovers · the Holy Breath.
